Do not let your country go to the dogs.

India has more than 20 million stray dogs. 20,000 people die of rabies every year. God knows how many die from traffic accidents caused by stray dogs chasing two wheelers. If the present failed policy of sterilising stray dogs and releasing them in the same locality continues for another 20 years we may have 200 million stray dogs.
We need to act now before stepping out of our homes becomes  scary.

Even if you love stray dogs spare a thought for the children playing on the streets attacked by stray dogs, the young boys delivering food to our homes on two wheelers or the street children scouring through our garbage to find something they can sell to the kabarhiwalala, routinely attacked by stray dogs.
The central governments has laid down a special policy for stray dogs under The Animal Birth Control Dog Rules 2001 applicable across the country. Is it fair for the central government to mandate a special status for dogs right across the nation. The right to decide on the special  status of stray dogs should be with each municipality and panchayat.
As per the World Health Organisation 36% of the worlds rabies deaths occur in India. This amounts to at least 20,000 lives sacrificed at the altar of stray doggy love.
The WHO (http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/87/12/09-021209/en/) says that the dog population in India has gone out of hand and some estimates are of 25 million dogs.
In another twenty years it could become 250 million if we continue our present system. Please do not let our country go to the dogs.
